Eva Organization for Women (EOW) welcomes International Women’s Day on Tuesday the 8th of March 2011. This global day honours the celebration of respect, appreciation and loves towards women to a celebration the economic, political and social achievements of women’s past, present and future.

This year is very special as we (women) celebrate a 100 year anniversary (centenary 1911-2011), and this year’s event EOW will focus the issue of FGM.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) also known as female genital cutting (FGC) comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. FGM is internationally recognized as a violation of human rights of girls and women.

Reasons behind FGM practice are attributed to cultural, religious and social factors within families and communities. FGM is indeed a horrific act against human rights which the statistics above reveal. However, it has rarely been discussed in everyday media and not enough light is shed on this issue. We would like to shed some light on this and have the voice of women (who either have been a victim of this practice or at risk of undergoing the experience) to be heard. Hence, it is necessary to improve people's awareness of the negative impact of this practice and the position of religion and medical science on this issue.

“Together we can make a difference in our community"
